Colon Cancer Awareness Events
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month! This year, approximately 140,000 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed and 56,000 people will die from the disease. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States for men and women. However, colon cancer can be prevented through regular screenings, a healthy diet and regular exercise.
To raise awareness of prevention and treatment, as well as raise funds to benefit the North Mississippi Medical Center Cancer Care Fund, we are planning our fourth annual Run for Your Buns 5K. The event will be held at 7:30am. Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Fairpark in Downtown Tupelo. The 5K will start at 7:30am., immediately followed by live music from local bands and entertainers. A formal event, The Blue Tie Affair, will be held at the Summit Center on Friday, March 29, 2019. There are many different ways to participate in this very worthy cause.
The Blue Tie Affair sponsorship provides approximately $200,000 annually to help qualifying cancer patients get much needed pain and anti-nausea medications, nutritional supplements, transportation for treatment and other supplies. This fund, administered by the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi, is often the only resource available to help patients and their families through this difficult period of their lives.
